Feeling stressed, anxious, or fatigued? Not sleeping well? Are you in pain? Worried about facing surgery? Overwhelmed by decisions to be made?

Research has shown that using relaxation and imagery affect heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, digestion, blood levels of stress hormones, and immune function. Several studies have found that using relaxation and guided imagery to prepare for surgery results in less post-operative pain, fever, surgical complications, shorter hospital stays, and less anxiety before and after surgery. Visualization and imagery can be used with pain, difficulty sleeping, anxiety, depression, stress and decision making. There is some evidence imagery can reduce nausea from chemotherapy.

While you can benefit from using imagery on your own, there is no substitute for working with a trained professional. Susan A. DiStasio, our nurse practitioner is available by appointment to guide you through the relaxation and imagery process.
