Yoga for People with Cancer

Yoga is an ancient system of relaxation, stretching, and breath work designed to unite the “body, mind, and spirit”. While it’s not a cure for cancer, yoga enhances physical and emotional wellness and brings a sense of peace for patients. Recent research has shown that people who participated in yoga classes during treatment for their cancer experienced significant improvement in their symptoms and overall improvement in the quality of their life.

This program focuses on gentle stretching, relaxation techniques, and breath work designed to help patients deal with stress, fatigue, and other symptoms. Restorative yoga utilizes props (pillows, blankets, bolsters), allowing the person to fully experience the benefit of the pose, without utilizing muscle strength. This adds to the person’s energy rather than taking away from it. Restorative yoga is especially beneficial for fatigued patients. Chairs are utilized for those participants who cannot get down to the floor easily.

Susan DiStasio, an oncology nurse practitioner at Northwestern Connecticut Oncology Hematology Associates, leads the classes. A Registered Yoga Instructor, Susan is certified in Body-Mind Yoga by the Center for Yoga and Healing in Amherst, Massachusetts. She is also certified by Beyond Ordinary Nursing in Interactive Imagery.

Classes are held in New Milford Ct. They are open to anyone with cancer, any stage, diagnosis, or age. All props and mats are supplied. Although there is no fee for the class, donations are accepted for the Center For Cancer Care Fund, Inc.
