Ivan S. Lowenthal, MD

Though he is a man of vision with a broad-based medical and scientific background, Dr. Lowenthal is known for the strong rapport he develops with his patients. A unique bond often forms, because patients know that he truly cares and will never give up on them.

Dr. Lowenthal earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA where he was a Phi Beta Kappa. Subsequently, he graduated medical school Summa Cum Laude from Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn NY. He then served as a Medical Intern and Resident at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center. His interest in cancer research led him to the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD. He first worked in the Medicine Branch and later in the Laboratory of Tumor Cell Biology. He completed a Nuclear Medicine Residency at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Boston, MA and served as an Assistant in Medicine there. Dr. Lowenthal then furthered his training by completing a Fellowship in Medical Oncology at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, Boston.

Seeking to combine the best attributes of academic medicine in a community setting, Dr. Lowenthal founded Northwestern Connecticut Oncology & Hematology Associates in 1980. He is a past president of the Connecticut Oncology Association and currently serves on the Board of Directors, Connecticut Oncology Network.

Dr. Lowenthal sees patients at Connecticut Oncology Hematology’s offices in Torrington and New Milford. He is Board Certified in Medical Oncology and Internal Medicine and has been licensed to practice medicine in California, Maryland, Massachusetts and Connecticut. He participates in Phase II, III and IV pharmaceutical and cooperative group Oncology and Hematology clinical trials.

Dr. Lowenthal enjoys an active personal life which includes visits to his beloved Maine. He is also devoted to his wife who is also a physician specializing in research and their three young adult children.
